Narrow Grid Ceilings
May 14th, 2009
The 9/16″ grid ceiling (vs. 15/16″) has begun to appear on our projects. Our experience and feedback from the field is that they are weaker than the standard grid (for obvious reasons), and that devices such as diffusers and grilles (among others) have not yet been created to be supported by the narrow tee. Just a heads-up on your up coming projects.

Hi Ed,
The electrical fixtures no matter what ceiling grid used must be supported by the structure not the grid. The diffussers are not as heavy so that may not be an issue

Your right John. However, multi-slot diffusers with the ceiling grid option utilize 15/16″ t-bars, and have a gap at the ends in a 9/16″ grid. In addition, 24″ x 24″ ceiling module speakers and relief/exhaust grilles must be absolutely centered or gaps appear along an edge. Contractors center such devices and actually tape them into place so as they don’t shift in the grid and expose any gaps. I post this just so you may discuss this during the planning stages with the architect. This “narrow” grid is just now finding extensive use. Designers like the look, but haven’t had any feedback on the issues in the field yet.

This is true for electrical devices, and I’m not sure if thats IBC or NEC, but I don’t know of any code or standard that has diffusers and grilles supported by the structure.
